A little girl was playing with an inflated balloon when it struck something sharp and suddenly deflated. The little girl began crying and said, “Daddy, there’s nothing left to it.”
Structurally, nothing was changed about the balloon except that it now had a hole in the wrong place. Its function and shape were resting upon the toughness of a thin membrane to protect it from sharp objects.
People without a source of inner strength built from basic beliefs are very much like the little girl’s balloon. These individuals are inflated by false values, false goals, and false ideas. They too will collapse from a sharp blow to their protective shell, when there is nothing inside.
When a person’s security or confidence is based upon their exterior world, they will ultimately find themselves in real trouble because they have a false security, a false self-confidence. If you peel away their material possessions or their position, there is nothing left of them.
A number of years ago Rollo May wrote, “we should develop centers of strength within ourselves which will enable us to stand despite whatever confusion or bewilderment may be taking place around us.”
There are numerous companies today that are downsizing; hundreds of long-term employees are suddenly unemployed. Those who thought they had security in their jobs are totally demoralized and deflated.
Inscribed over the Arch of Apollo at Delphi you will find two words, “Know Thyself”. Tremendous compensation is waiting for the person who will develop their potential, but the greatest reward is in knowing that you cannot be deflated by circumstances. There is something inside everyone that is far superior to anything outside. Finding and developing that something gives you real security.
